Elliot Housing Co-operative Limited

Elliot Housing Co-operative

local authority:   Canterbury City Council

Elliot Housing Co-operative is a small scheme of 13 properties in the Sturry Road area of Canterbury in Kent. The properties are one and two bedroom bungalows, and are for tenant-members who are 60 and over.

The co-operative was built by CDS Co-operatives in 1996 and remains under CDS Co-operatives’s ownership. All tenancies are assured.

The bungalows are built on three sides of a square and this cul-de-sac is set a little way back from the through road. The bungalows are designed to mobility standard and have a ‘lifeline’ alarm system fitted. All the properties have double glazing and central heating. There are private back gardens and open plan front gardens which the residents maintain to a very high standard - winning the Canterbury in Bloom Community Award for Outstanding Gardens in 2004. Car parking spaces are in front of the bungalows.

The properties are a short walk from Sturry Road which has local shops, and there are also large superstores within minutes by bus or car. The town centre of Canterbury with all its amenities is then just a little further on. There is a ‘social club’ next to Elliot Close which is used for various community activities.

After internal transfers, 100% of vacancies are given to Canterbury Council for nominations from their housing register. Applicants (or in the case of joint tenancies, at least one applicant) should be over 60. The service charge covers the communal area gardening and the communal TV aerial.
